Rakghouls were known for evolving at incredible speeds, but they never showed signs of intelligence until shortly before the end of the Cold War. The Nekghouls were larger and far smarter than their rakghoul cousins, and were considered a new species in their own right - although it was believed that they were unable to infect and transform their victims, most of them possessed sensitivity to the Force and violent, untrained talent in its use.
